Rhode Island men’s basketball player stepping away from the program. Who is it?

SOUTH KINGSTOWN — Tyonne Farrell is stepping away from the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball program.

The Rams announced in a Monday afternoon statement that the freshman forward will be away from the program effective immediately. There is no set timetable for his potential return. Farrell has appeared in 18 games this season, including four minutes in an 82-67 road loss at George Mason on Saturday.

“Tyonne is going to take time away from the program to reset himself,” URI coach Archie Miller said in a statement. “We will work with him over the remainder of the season to determine his best steps moving forward. Right now, this is the best thing for him and for the team.”

Tyonne Farrell drives the lane against Fairfield defender Prophet Johnson in November. On Monday, URI announced he was stepping away from the team.

Farrell was in the starting lineup for all but one of his first 16 appearances before suffering an ankle injury prior to a road game at Loyola Chicago. He missed that Jan. 15 loss at the Ramblers and five contests in all before returning off the bench in an 80-79 loss on Wednesday at Fordham. Farrell is the lone first-year player who’s been able to crack the rotation for URI in 2024-25.

“I think at the end of the day what’s best for him right now is to take a deep breath,” Miller said during an afternoon media availability at the Ryan Center. “I’ll just leave it at that.

“No one incident, no one issue — I think all these guys go through a lot during the course of a year. At the end of the day sometimes it becomes too much, and when that happens you set them up for failure.

“I think right now what we’re trying to do — and what we’re going to do for our team and our players all the time — is put them in a position where they can be successful.”
