Tom Izzo sits one win away from more history.
Michigan State basketball hosts Indiana on Tuesday in its first chance for Izzo to break a tie with Bob Knight for the most conference wins in Big Ten history. A 354th victory in league play also would give the Spartans their 13th straight season with at least 20 wins overall, which almost assuredly would extend Izzo’s record streak of NCAA tournament appearances at one school to 27 straight.
It only gets harder from now until March Madness, however. And the final month will go a long way to determining what MSU’s seeding and placement will be come Selection Sunday on March 16.
PRESENT TENSE: Michigan State basketball past, present collide in gritty ‘top 5’er’ comeback for Tom Izzo
Michigan State’s head coach Tom Izzo thanks the crowd after the game against Oregon on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025, at the Breslin Center East Lansing.
The Spartans (19-4, 10-2) travel to Illinois on Saturday for another critical showdown in the chase for Izzo’s 11th Big Ten regular-season title, which would put him in a three-way tie with Knight and Purdue’s Ward “Piggy” Lambert for the most in league history. That kicks off the gauntlet home stretch that sees Izzo’s team host Purdue and travel to Michigan next week, then visit Maryland on Feb. 26 before a three-game finish against Wisconsin (at home), at Iowa and against the Wolverines (at home) on March 9 heading into the Big Ten tournament in Indianapolis.
Each week, the Free Press will take a look back at the Spartans’ previous week and assess how their resume has changed and stacks up to the competition.
