If basketball was just a game about outside shooting, the Armstrong boys’ basketball team would be in good shape.
The Falcons have a plethora of strong three-point shooters, but lack a true post player to match up with a majority of the top teams in the state.
“Size is an issue,” head coach Greg Miller said.
The team’s leading rebounder – senior Brian Hosfield – stands 6 feet, 6 inches tall.
“Brian has become very strong physically and is our only big man with experience,” Miller said. “He is versatile in that he can score inside and out and can rebound and defend.”
The Falcons’ strength is their backcourt, where they return junior point guard Alex Rubin and senior shooting guard Joe Weber.
Rubin led the Falcons in scoring, steals and assists last season and should receive attention from Division I programs.
Weber is a gunner who can be dangerous if he gets hot from the outside. Miller says that along with his three-point shooting, Weber has improved his strength and ball handling skills.
At the forward position the Falcons return 6-foot, 4-inch senior Mark Torell and 6- foot, 3-inch junior Carter Biewen.
Torell showed his explosiveness in a section quarterfinal game last season when he scored 16 points in one half.
“Mark can score many ways, including from three point land,” Miller said. “He will be one of our leading scorers.”
Biewen started several games for the Falcons last year as a sophomore and should play a prominent role this season.
Other players expected to contribute this season include Scott Kaitz and senior forward Joe Kealy.
At 6 feet, 4 inches, Kealy will often be asked to guard the opposing team’s big man.
“He will be our defensive stopper and will be asked to guard big men as an undersized post,” Miller said. “He is a key to our team as we need role players to step up and do the dirty work.”
