ASUN men’s basketball is a logjam at the top with Dolphins among four teams tied for first

There was a five-way tie for first in the ASUN men’s basketball standings entering Saturday’s games.

The picture didn’t get much clearer as the day’s proceedings ended with a four-way tie for first.

Jacksonville University, Florida Gulf Coast, Lipscomb, North Alabama and Queens were 8-3 in the conference before Saturday. JU beat Bellarmine, FGCU cruised past North Florida, Lipscomb topped Queens in the only meeting between any two of the teams tied at the top and North Alabama beat West Georgia.

Jacksonville University junior forward Stephon Payne III led the Dolphins with 20 points in a 74-65 victory over Bellarmine on Feb. 8 at Swisher Gym.

With all teams having six conference games left, forecasting the seedings for the ASUN tournament, which will begin on March 2, is difficult and almost pointless.

The first tiebreaker among teams is head-to-head competition. After that, the tied teams’ record against the No. 1 seed (descending below that if there is a tie) and, finally, the NCAA Net rankings.

Based on the tiebreakers, FGCU would be the No. 1 seed if the tournament was played today, followed by Lipscomb, North Alabama and JU

And it’s not just the four teams tied at 9-3. Queens and Eastern Kentucky are both 8-4 North Florida is 6-6 and Stetson and Austin Peay are 5-7, which means nine teams are tied for first or within four games. Ten teams will qualify for the tournament.

There’s a lot of basketball left, including eight matchups among the six teams at 9-3 or 8-4.

Stay tuned.

Jacksonville (15-9, 9-3 ASUN): Junior guard Robert McCray V, the Dolphins’ leader in points, assists and steals, missed both games last week because of an illness but JU gutted out two victories including its first at home in 21 days in topping Bellarmine 74-65 on Saturday.
