Sydnee Richetto produced a game-leading 22 points, and Myah Montgomery scored six points in the final three minutes to lift the Kentucky Wesleyan College women’s basketball team to a 71-68 win over conference foe Hillsdale on Saturday at the Sportscenter.
With the victory, the Panthers (12-8, 8-7 G-MAC) avenged a 77-44 road loss to the Chargers last week.
Hillsdale (15-7, 12-3) took a 66-65 lead on Marilyn Popplewell’s layup with 3:11 remaining, but Montgomery’s 3-pointer 14 seconds later put the Panthers ahead for good. Her offensive rebound and putback gave KWC a four-point cushion with 1:05 remaining before the Chargers cut the lead to two with 26 seconds left. Montgomery split a pair of free throws, and Wesleyan forced a miss on Hillsdale’s game-tying attempt in the final seconds to cement the victory.
KWC’s Shiya Hoosier finished with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-3 from beyond the arc, while Montgomery added 11 points with a team-high seven rebounds.
The Panthers shot 44.3% from the floor, 10-of-24 from 3-point distance (41.7%) and 7-of-14 at the free-throw line (50%) with nine turnovers. Wesleyan narrowly won the battle of the boards (39-38) but finished with a 22-16 advantage in second-chance scoring.
Caitlin Splain scored 20 points for Hillsdale, while Lauren McDonald posted 17 points and 12 rebounds. The Chargers shot 40.6% from the floor, including 7-of-22 from 3-point range (31.8%), and made 9-of-11 foul shots (81.8%) with 10 turnovers.
Wesleyan returns to action Thursday with a trip to face Northwood in another G-MAC clash.
