No Chucky Hepburn? No problem – for now, at least.
With its leading scorer and facilitator sidelined due to a groin injury he suffered during Wednesday’s win at Boston College, Louisville basketball still found a way to take care of business Saturday against Miami, the ACC’s last-place team: 88-78.
Pat Kelsey’s Cardinals (18-6, 11-2 ACC) led the Hurricanes for all but 25 seconds and by as many as 15 points at the 11:12 mark of the second half. But this was a five-point game, 72-67, with 6:08 remaining in regulation.
U of L separated itself for good from there with a 7-0 run capped off by a Khani Rooths and-1 dunk that sent the KFC Yum! Center into a frenzy. Reyne Smith accounted for the other four points by draining a 3 and drawing a foul less than a minute earlier.
Terrence Edwards Jr., assuming point-guard duties in Hepburn’s absence, scored a game-high 27 points on 10-for-16 shooting (3 for 4 from 3) and dished out a career-high 10 assists in 40 minutes of run. Smith followed with 26 points on 7-for-19 shooting.
Sophomore forward James Scott checked out of the game at the 11:13 mark of the first half and did not return. He was slow to get up after taking a tumble; and a replay of the sequence shows the left thigh of Hurricanes forward Brandon Johnson landing on his head while they pursued a loose ball.
Up next for Louisville: a 7 p.m. tipoff Wednesday at N.C. State.
