Do Indiana fans want to steal Michigan basketball’s Dusty May?: ‘Not my No. 1’

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. − The vibes were rather low pregame at historic Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

When the Hoosiers, losers of four in a row and six in their last seven, took the court for Saturday’s contest against No. 22 Michigan basketball (17-5, 9-2 Big Ten) with less than 30 minutes to go before tipoff, the welcome was muted at best.

This is because Indiana fans, like Guy Soule from Aurora, Indiana, are dejected. Less than 24 hours ago, one of the program’s legendary players, Mike Woodson, who’d come back to restore his alma mater to its former glory, made it official that his fourth year back at Indiana would be his final one and that he’d step down at the end of the season.

“To me, I think he lost his players, they’re not playing hard for him,” Soule said to the Free Press of what went wrong. “When you lose your players and the fans are chanting for your head basically, it’s time to go for it.”

Soule, 65, has been as big a Hoosier fan as they come since 1975 − heck, even his email has the word “Hoosier” in it. Both of his daughters did their undergraduate studies in Bloomington and he’s had season tickets since 2008.

When asked if it were up to him and he could choose anybody on earth to lead his beloved program, he gave the same answer as the five gentlemen the Free Press asked in the lobby of the Fairfield Inn & Suites: former Boston Celtics coach and current president of basketball operations Brad Stevens; a Zionsville, Indiana native, though he admitted that may be a pipe dream.

Next, but still on that tier − Chris Beard.
