The Ohio State basketball team picked up another top-25 win Thursday evening, taking down the Maryland Terrapins.
The Buckeyes were absolutely willed to victory by Burce Thornton, who should start to be in the conversation for the best guard in the country after his electric performance.
The Buckeyes defense also stepped up in a big way. It ended the half down 41-32, but battled back furiously in the second half. Ohio State won 73-70, coming out with a major home win in a game that could help decide its fate in March for the NCAA Tournament.
While the Buckeyes are approaching double-digit losses, they do have a solid resume still, especially in Big Ten play.
As for Thornton, he was the only player to score more than 13 points for the Buckeyes, dropping 31 to go along with 6 assists and 5 rebounds. He also played a game-high 40 minutes and banked in the game-winning three-point basket with the sands of the hourglass running out.
Thornton, who is originally from Alpharetta, GA, was the no. 47 recruit in the Class of 2022, joining the Buckeyes as a freshman. Now a junior, he is averaging a career-high 46.1% from deep. He has notched double figures in each of his three seasons but is also at a career-best 17.7 points per game. He has been the engine for this Buckeyes team.
The Buckeyes, with wins over Texas, Kentucky, Purdue, and now Maryland, have a solid resume despite having a 3-game losing streak at one point in the season and a few discouraging losses, like at home against Pitt.
Nonetheless, this team truly controls its own destiny, and Thursday evening helped quite a bit.
