Big second half pushes Bethel men past Cumberland

Bethel’s men used a big second half to beat host Cumberland in the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena 91-82 Thursday night.

Cumberland (10-12, 3-4 Mid-South Conference) scored 82 points while shooting 36.6% from the floor. The Phoenix made 26 of 71 attempts, including 6 of 23 from 3-point range (26.1 percent), and capitalized at the free-throw line, hitting 24 of 36 (66.7 percent).

Leading the way was Jalen Anglin, who posted a game-high 30 points on 10-of-16 shooting, including three 3-pointers and a near-perfect 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Triston Conger followed with 18 points, contributing five assists and three rebounds. Keyshawn Robinson was a force on the boards, pulling down 14 rebounds to go with his 13 points.

Defensively, Cumberland tallied 12 steals and three blocks, showing active hands throughout the game. The Phoenix also controlled the rebounding battle with 41 total boards.

Bethel (15-8, 3-5 MSC) showcased an efficient offensive performance, scoring 91 points while shooting an impressive 50% from the field. The Wildcats connected on 35 of 70 shot attempts, though they struggled from beyond the arc, making just 3-of-15 (20 percent). At the free-throw line, they converted 18 of 27 attempts (66.7 percent).

Jackson Hayes led the scoring effort with 15 points, a career-high for the sophomore, on an efficient 7-of-8 shooting, while Joe Wimberly and Trevor Chatman each added 12 points. Conner Guthrie and David Starr provided valuable contributions off the bench, scoring 10 and nine points, respectively. Bethel also dominated the glass, securing 50 total rebounds, with Chatman leading the team with seven boards.

Ball movement was a key factor in Bethel’s success, as the Wildcats dished out 14 assists compared to Cumberland’s seven. Defensively, the Wildcats recorded 10 steals and three blocks but also committed 17 turnovers.
