UNC forward named amongst greatest transfer portal misses by 247Sports

Hoping to address some major holes in their roster ahead of the current college basketball season, UNC visited the transfer portal and added three players.

Through 23 games and with North Carolina (13-10, 6-5 ACC) desperately fighting for NCAA Tournament positioning, it’s safe to say the transfer portal additions are falling extremely short of expectations.

Cade Tyson, the Belmont transfer who we though would immediately slide into the starting lineup, barely sees minutes off the bench. Ty Claude looks decent in limited action, but the Georgia Tech transfer doesn’t play enough . Ven-Allen Lubin came over from Vanderbilt with high hopes, but he fell behind Jalen Washington on the depth chart.

Tyson doesn’t play a ton, with just 47 minutes through the Tar Heels’ 2025 slate of seven games, but he has just eight points in those same games.

“Cade Tyson is another lesson in avoiding groupthink and trusting your own evaluations,” Branham said. “Having watched Tyson closely over the past five years, both in high school and at Belmont, I initially saw him as an impactful mid-major player with a clear shooting specialty. At Belmont, he found the perfect system, thriving as a catch-and-shoot marksman. However, it was evident that his defensive limitations would be an issue, meaning he’d need to shoot at an elite level – while relying on teammates for defensive…
