Rutgers basketball: After hardly eating for 10 days, Jeremiah Williams came through

PISCATAWAY – On Wednesday afternoon, all but one member of the Rutgers basketball team ate the standard pregame dinner of proteins, carbs and vegetables.

Jeremiah Williams consumed only a bowl of fruit.

The senior guard hasn’t eaten a full meal in over a week due to a flu-like illness that he more or less played through. On Wednesday he summoned the grit to score 13 points in 25 minutes and recorded the game-clinching steal as the Scarlet Knights stunned No. 23 Illinois 82-73.

“I’m down 12 pounds from all the throwing up,” said the 6-foot-4 Williams, who now weighs 190. “On the bright side, I feel a little faster – a little younger.”

Much has been made of star point guard Dylan Harper’s electric return from a sprained ankle, and understandably so, but Williams’ brutal ordeal of the past week should be recognized. He first started feeling ill Jan. 28, the day before Rutgers’ win at Northwestern, during which he logged 15 minutes and chipped in three points and two assists.

“Once we got there I was vomiting and had chills and was sweating profusely,” he said. “I gave it a shot but I was very cold the whole night – I warmed up in a hoodie and sweats. I told coach, ‘If you need me, I’ll be there.’”

Pikiell is an old-school tough guy who played with a constantly dislocating shoulder throughout his own collegiate career at UConn, but even he was taken aback at the sight of his co-captain.

“He had a winter jacket at halftime, shivering,” Pikiell said.

Then came Saturday’s home game against Michigan.

“I kept throwing up in the locker room before the game,”…
