A final-seconds putback by Fordham’s Matt Zona led to a heartbreaking 80-79 loss for the Rhode Island men’s basketball team Wednesday night in New York City.
URI bounced back from a 15-point first-half deficit to take control of the game, with Sebastian Thomas making a pair of 3-pointers to give the visitors a 75-70 lead with 1:56 to play. But a Fordham 3-pointer by Josh Rivera narrowed the gap and, after Jaden House’s layup pushed the lead back to 5, a layup, then a 3-pointer by Jackie Johnson III kept Fordham at Rhody’s heels.

Thomas was fouled with 8 seconds to go, but missed the first foul shot of a 1-and-1 (URI’s first missed free throw of the game). On the next possession, Fordham’s Japhet Medor missed a driving layup, but Zona was able to get the putback for the winning basket.
Thomas led Rhode Island with 20 points to go with seven rebounds, five assists and four steals, David Green had 18 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots, and David Fuchs scored a season-high 16 points, with eight rebounds in the loss.
Rhode Island was looking to win back-to-back conference games for the first time this season, and hoping to climb back to .500 in Atlantic 10 play. A victory would have meant the Rams would have their most wins in a season since going 21-9 in 2019-20.
URI falls to 15-7 overall, and 4-6 Atlantic 10 play. The Rams are back in action Saturday at George Mason. Tip off is set for 4 p.m.
