Penn State basektball’s D’Marco Dunn’s a glue guy

The second-year head coach had a lot to say after the Nittany Lions’ loss to the Buckeyes.

Every high-level basketball team needs a glue guy. A connector. A person whose impact is often felt without showing up in the stat sheet.

For Penn State basketball, that guy is senior D’Marco Dunn.

The 6-foot-5 guard does a lot of things for the Nittany Lions as the first guard off the bench. From playing sound defense against opposing guards, to getting timely rebounds, to playing with the offensive awareness of whether to call his own number or to facilitate, all while making the right reads and keeping the ball moving.

Dunn’s numbers are gaudy, but they aren’t supposed to be; that isn’t his role. But within his role of being a reserve guard who can make things happen on both ends of the floor, he excels at that.

“That’s just my approach to the game. That’s always been my mentality,” Dunn said during Monday’s media availability. “Even at North Carolina, I had a somewhat similar role of just playing defense, you know, maybe not being on the ball as much. That’s always been my approach, even since high school, you know, whatever it takes to win.”

Dunn has seen more of the spotlight over the last four games as his impact is being see on the stat sheet, not just beyond it. He’s averaging a solid 11.5 points per game off the bench on an impressive 47% on 3-pointers and 9-for-10 on free throws.

His most recent performance was his best so far this season: 18 points on 11 shots, 2-for-4 on 3-pointers and a perfect 4-for-4 on free throws to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Even though it came in a loss against Minnesota, Dunn was the best player on the floor for a decent portion of that game.
