Monmouth basketball vs. Hampton: High-flying Hawks’ offense just one compelling storyline

WEST LONG BRANCH – Great individual performances. Dramatic moments. Winning basketball.

Monmouth’s performances at OceanFirst Bank Center are reminiscent of a year ago, when Xander Rice led the heroics as they won 13 straight at home, with the Hawks having won 18 of their last 19 at the Jersey Shore when they host Hampton tonight (7 p.m.).

The difference is this team still has a chance to do something special if it can continue to build.

Hampton (11-12, 3-7 CAA) was an 80-79 winner in overtime over Howard in Washington, D.C. Saturday in a non-conference matchup, but lost three straight CAA games before that.

1. Keep growing

As harrowing as Monmouth’s non-conference journey against high majors and top mid-majors was at the time, the Hawks appeared to come out the other end last weekend with a pair of solid home wins to get back to .500 in CAA play.

Monmouth is in seventh in the 14-team league with eight games remaining before the CAA Tournament.

“We’re a sneaky one right now, and if we keep believing in each other we’re going to make some noise before this is all said and done,” Monmouth head coach King Rice said. “We were able to beat Charleston, we gave Wilmington a good run, we beat Drexel, we’ve got Towson coming soon and they are one of the better teams. We outplayed William & Mary for 37 minutes.”
