How Texas basketball’s first half of doom sealed Horns’ fate vs. Arkansas | Golden

It’s mind boggling how the Texas Longhorns can look like world beaters one game and then fall face first to the hardwood the next.

So much could have been gained with a home win over Arkansas on Wednesday night, but the Horns turned in their most uninspired first half of the season. Who would have thought a 4-3 lead would be their lone advantage over 40 mind-numbing minutes?

The 78-70 loss wasn’t as close as the score indicates. Texas didn’t show up when it mattered in front of 10,799 at Moody Center, and while most games are decided down the stretch, it was the opening 20 minutes that sealed its fate.

Texas forward Devon Pryor reacts to a hard landing during the second half of Wednesday night’s 78-70 loss to Arkansas at Moody Center. It was that kind of night: Texas’ only lead of the game came early, at 4-3.

Four days after Rodney Terry’s crew blitzed LSU with 58 second-half points in a massive 89-58 road win, the Horns greeted the home folks with a measly 24 points in the first half. The loss dropped the Horns (15-8, 4-6) further down in the crowded SEC. ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi had them as a No. 9 NCAA tourney seed before Wednesday’s tipoff, but this bad home loss will push them closer to the bubble.

“In this league, you can’t give 20 minutes away in terms of being out-physical-ed and out-toughed,” Terry said. “You just can’t do that. They did that to us tonight in the first half.”

Terry has to take a long look in the mirror and figure out why his team has these moments of malaise that often conspire against the utlimate goal. When the Horns play this way, it’s damn near unwatchable. They made only 34.4% of their field-goal attempts and knocked down just six of 22 3-point attempts. It’s a make-or-miss league and the Horns, try as they might, weren’t able to overcome some icy shooting and worse, some suspect defense at times.

It went from bad to worse in a hurry…
