The penultimate month of the college basketball season is finally here. Throughout the first two-thirds of the season, the SEC has shown superiority throughout, constantly claiming close to 50% of the top 10 selections in both the AP and Coaches Polls, while dominating the NET Ranking landscape with Quad 1 victories. A conference that once reigned supreme in football has now taken their dominance to the hardwood.
All but three or four programs are likely to go “dancing” in the NCAA Tournament, but some have a clear advantage over the rest. Here is where the conference power rankings stand with just over a month left in the regular season.
No. 16: South Carolina
In a conference that has become a runaway train chugging its way up every major poll, South Carolina is unfortunately developing into the detached caboose that runs out of speed at the apex of the hill. The Gamecocks have lost every single contest in conference play, although six of the nine losses have been by two possessions or less. Collin-Murray Boyles is an absolute star that can will his team to a win, or even two, in the conference tournament, but South Carolina has about as close to a 0% chance to play postseason basketball as a program can have.
No. 15: LSU
Much like South Carolina, LSU is one of the few programs in the conference that failed to receive the memo stating they were supposed to be good. Cam Carter (17.3 points per game) is a great player, but the Tigers lack of depth in almost every position behind their best player is not a recipe for winning basketball. Matt McMahon’s squad has lost four straight games after picking up their lone conference win over Arkansas.
No. 14: Arkansas
After starting conference play winless in four tries, John Calipari’s Razorbacks have played .500 basketball since.
