It was the second loss in Big Ten play for Michigan State, and a season-defining win for UCLA, as the Bruins took down the Spartans on Tuesday night in Los Angeles. After the game, UCLA head coach Mick Cronin talked about the win, and then had some very interesting comments on how relationship with Tom Izzo, who he spoke extremely highly of.
You can see what he had to say below:
On the Turnovers
‘The story of the game guys was one stat: points off turnovers. We only had three turnovers. I told the guys we get to the NCAA Tournament we play every game with only three turnovers, we’ll cut the nets down. That’s hard to do now when you’re playing Michigan State.’
On the Win
Coach Cronin told a story about how Bob Huggins once told him how ‘Real programs win when you don’t make shots.’
We missed layups, we missed free throws, we couldn’t make a shot in the second half to save our life, but we won anyway.’
On his relationship with Tom Izzo
‘I told Dan Guerrero when I was being interviewed that I thought if I could get a job like UCLA I could build a program like Michigan State. He’s been to seven final fours and won a title, with class, integrity, he’s a leader in his community, his school, I mean if he’s not the Dean of college basketball I don’t know who is… For us in the coaching world, he reaches out to anyone who’s struggling. The guy cares about coaches… He cares about players, he cares about coaches, and he’s just a great, great guy. I appreciate him, I look up to him.’
