The 2024-2025 college basketball season has been anything but successful for the North Carolina Tar Heels, who entered a Preseason Top 25 team with National Championship aspirations.
Instead, 23 games into its campaign, UNC is in great danger of missing the NCAA Tournament – for a second time in three years.
North Carolina entered the Maui Invitational 3-1, with its lone loss against a ranked Kansas squad. The Tar Heels came back from 21 down against Dayton, broke a losing streak to ranked programs against UCLA on December 21, then won four consecutive games in January to give fans hope again.
UNC is currently 13-10 overall, 6-5 in the ACC and 1-4 in its last five games, a mark that could be winless if not for late-game heroics against Boston College. North Carolina’s lack of height is a glaring issue, defensive continues lagging and 3-pointers rarely fall with consistency.
On the ACC Network’s “Nothing But Net” show Monday, February 3, former UNC National Champion Joel Berry gave an insightful take on the current state of college basketball in Chapel Hill.
“I don’t like going on rollercoasters,” Berry said. “I get sick, I don’t feel good. That’s where the Carolina fans are, because you go from Coach Davis’ first year making the National Championship, you come back the next year Number One in the preseason – and you miss the tournament. Then you come back the next year, Coach of the Year, you’ve got ACC Player of the Year RJ Davis. Now we’re in this year where you’re sitting at 6-5 and the competitiveness isn’t there. The roster construction isn’t there.”
“They missed out in the portal because you lose Armando Bacot and you now have Jalen Washington, who really didn’t play much, because Armando took up and ate up all the minutes,” Berry continued. “And then you bring in Cade Tyson, his play hasn’t fared out.
