‘Don’t be satisfied’: Kansas State basketball team determined to build on recent success

Ten days ago, Kansas State’s basketball team was simply looking for a way, any way, to win a game.

My, how things have changed.

After hanging on for dear life to edge Arizona State, 71-70, Tuesday night at Desert Financial Arena in Tempe, Arizona, the Wildcats’ focus now is not letting success go to their heads. Four victories in a row will do that.

“My message to the guys today was, don’t be satisfied,” K-State forward Coleman Hawkins said after the Wildcats spotted Arizona State an 18-2 lead, built a double-digit advantage of their own, and then held off a furious Sun Devils rally at the end.

“We can’t be satisfied with what we’ve done so far. We still have a game to play, and it starts with the game that we’re about to play right now, which was Arizona State.

Since ending a six-game skid on Jan. 25 against West Virginia, the Wildcats have taken their game to a new level. But after double-digit victories against the Mountaineers and Oklahoma State at home and a blowout of then-No. 3 Iowa State last Saturday to end a 15-game road losing streak, getting past Arizona State was more of a challenge.

In fact, the Sun Devils had a chance to win it with 4.1 seconds left, only to see freshman Jayden Quintaince miss back-to-back free throws.

Still, K-State found a way at the end in a tight game, something that was sorely lacking just a few weeks ago. The Wildcats are now back to .500 at 11-1 and have improved to 5-6 in the Big 12.

Next up for the Wildcats is a home game at 1 p.m. Saturday against Kansas in the second edition of the Sunflower Showdown. KU won the first meeting in Lawrence on Jan. 18, 84-74.
