The first Monday in February has arrived.
That means the final full month of the college basketball regular season is upon us. It won’t be long before the calendar flips to March and the real fun begins.
Where do the state’s Division I men’s and women’s teams stand at what is basically the midpoint of their respective conference schedules? Some outlooks are better than others.
Bryant’s men and Brown’s women both make a compelling case to be most excited, a potential America East title and an Ivy Madness berth, respectively, currently in their grasp. The Bulldogs and Bears still have a considerable distance to travel, but they’re trending in a nice direction. The rest of the field has some work to do and is running out of time to take advantage of the opportunities on their schedules.
Here’s a quick look at all eight programs entering what always develops into the best time of the year.
Bryant men (14-9, 8-0 America East)
The Bulldogs completed a full conference set with a 92-70 demolition of NJIT on Saturday. Bryant has been untouchable since a 112-66 loss at Grand Canyon to end nonleague play, riding strong performances from Earl Timberlake, Rafael Pinzon, Barry Evans and Connor Withers. Going just 4-4 over the next eight would secure at least a quarterfinal home game in the league tournament.
There was also a sign of additional depth in weekend wins over UMBC and the Highlanders. Aaron Davis ‒ in the rotation in place of Evans, who missed both games due to illness ‒ netted a combined 25 points and didn’t commit a turnover. Head coach Phil Martelli Jr. has his team dialed in on all cylinders entering Thursday’s 6 p.m. home tip with Albany.
