It’s been a little less than a year since Cincinnati Bearcats men’s basketball was in Orlando nailing down a quad 1 win. Wednesday night, UC and Wes Miller return to Addition Financial Arena hoping to snare their first such victory of this season.
The Knights’ NCAA NET ranking and the fact that it’s a road game for UC make it another quad 1 opportunity, the most valued win by the NCAA selection committee. The Bearcats failed in their most recent attempts for a quad 1 win against Texas Tech at home and BYU in Provo.
Cincinnati Bearcats guard Day Day Thomas (1) got his first start of the season Sunday vs. West Virginia. Thomas led UC with 10 points but the Bearcats lost to the Mountaineers, 63-50.
The Bearcats are coming off a Sunday afternoon contest to forget against West Virginia. They led for just 45 seconds and seemed in disarray as the Mountaineers nailed 9-of-18 3-pointers and forced 14 turnovers in the 63-50 victory. UC got 10 points from Day Day Thomas and eight from Simas Lukošius. Last March 12, those same two combined for 50 points while beating WVU in the Big 12 tournament. Sunday, that was all UC could muster in 40 minutes.
“If I’m somebody that supports this program, I’d be frustrated, I’d be pissed at what I was watching,” UC coach Wes Miller said. “I take full responsibility. It’s on me. We’ve got a lot of basketball left. We need to figure out a way to play a style and a level of basketball that makes people proud about the way that we wear the jersey. Right now, we’re not doing that. There’s nothing I can say that hurts more to say.”
UCF was home Saturday against BYU, which visits Fifth Third Arena next Saturday night. The Cougars handed the Knights just their third home loss, 81-75.
The Bearcats will be trying to avoid a fourth consecutive loss, which they have already accomplished in their first four Big 12 games of the season.
