Kansas State basketball suddenly is one of the hottest teams in the Big 12. What better time for a trip to the desert?

The Wildcats (10-11, 4-6 Big 12) will try to keep the heat on Tuesday with a 9 p.m. central game against Arizona State (12-9, 3-7) at Desert Financial Arena in Tempe, Arizona.

K-State, a winner of three straight games for the first time all season, is coming off a historic 80-61 upset of No. 3-ranked Iowa State on Saturday, ending the Cyclones’ 29-game home winning streak while ending a 15-game road skid of its own.

The Wildcats began their resurgence with a convincing 73-60 victory at home against West Virginia on Jan. 25 and then dominated Oklahoma State, 85-57, to avenge an earlier double-digit loss to the Cowboys, before stunning Iowa State as a 14.5-point underdog.

Here are three things to know, plus a prediction, for Tuesday’s game.

K-State newcomers flexing their muscles

Super-senior forward David N’Guessan, the only remaining contributor to K-State’s Elite Eight run two years ago, continues to lead the Wildcats in scoring with 12.2 points per game and ranks second in rebounding with a 7.0 average.

But since the start of Big 12 play and particularly during the Wildcats’ three-game winning streak, four newcomers have been the main catalysts.

Forward Coleman Hawkins leads the Wildcats in the conference games with 13.4 points per game, and he is averaging 14.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists during the winning streak. Point guard Dug McDaniel has averaged 15 points and 5.7 assists during the three-game stretch, guard Brendan Hausen 13 points on 50% 3-point accuracy and guard Max Jones 12.7 points.
