Zakai Zeigler will play for Tennessee basketball vs Missouri after right knee injury

Zakai Zeigler is ready to return for Tennessee basketball after missing a game with a right knee injury.

The Vols guard vowed Sunday that he will play when UT hosts Missouri on Wednesday.

“I’m good,” Zeigler said on “The Locker Room.” “I’ll be back next game. Simple as that.”

Zeigler did not play in Tennessee’s 64-44 win against Florida on Saturday due to the injury. He left the Vols’ 78-73 loss to Kentucky on Tuesday late in the first half after suffering the injury before returning to the game. He said he did not play Saturday because the knee “was a little off” and he was “in some pain.” Coach Rick Barnes indicated that Zeigler had an MRI on Friday and it showed the knee was structurally sound.

Zeigler is averaging 12.3 points and 7.4 assists this season before the Vols (18-4, 5-4 SEC) host the Tigers (17-4, 6-2) on Wednesday (7 p.m. ET, SEC Network) at Food City Center.

Zeigler ended a 51-game starting streak when he missed the Florida game, but his absence will only be for a game.

He did not practice Thursday and was limited in Friday’s practice. He said he knew Friday that he couldn’t play Saturday because something in his knee was bothering him. He focused on cheering on his teammates’ to their best win of the season in toppling the No. 6 Gators with only seven available scholarship players.

“I was just like, I got to just take it on the chin,” Zeigler said. “There’s nothing I can really do at this point and I just got to have my brothers’ back because I know they’re going to go out there and do whatever they could do.”

Senior Jordan Gainey started at point guard and had one of his best games with the Vols. He had 16 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Forward Igor Milicic Jr. also did not play against Florida due to flu-like symptoms.
