On Saturday afternoon, USC men’s basketball made a huge statement when the Trojans knocked off No. 7 Michigan State. Making the victory even more significant was the coach on the opposing bench. A Hall of Fame inductee with eight Final Four appearances to his name, the Spartans’ Tom Izzo is one of the great coaches in college basketball history. To take down a top-10 team with him, of all people, at the helm was a massive statement by the Trojans. It was and is a great sign of things to come for the USC program under Eric Musselman.
Following the game, Tom Izzo had high praise for the Trojans.
“They got good players, and they got good size,” Izzo said. “Those guards are bigger than ours, and the 4-men are smaller. And it was just a tough matchup for us. And sometimes matchups make a difference in games.”
The Trojans will have another chance to take down a top-10 opponent when they visit Purdue on Friday. Up first, however, is a trip to Evanston, Illinois on Tuesday night for a matchup with Northwestern. USC needs to get on a roll to become a more central part of the NCAA Tournament bubble picture. The Trojans must at least split these next two games. If they can win both, they will become a serious player on the bubble.
