Leonard Hamilton to leave Florida State basketball after conclusion of 2024-25 season

Florida State has announced that Seminoles men’s basketball coach Leonard Hamilton will not return after this season.

The Tallahassee Democrat, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported Hamilton’s decision to resign after 23 seasons with the Seminoles. The 76-year-old coach, who is in the final year of his contract, is the third ACC coach to resign this season, joining Virginia’s Tony Bennett and Miami’s Jim Larrañaga. He currently holds an overall record of 434-290 and an ACC record of 196-186 at Florida State.

Hamilton arrived in Tallahassee in 2003. He led the Seminoles to a 14-19 overall record in his first season, finally breaking through to the NCAA Tournament in 2009.

The Seminoles also have an ACC Tournament championship under Hamilton, in 2012, when Florida State defeated No. 4 North Carolina 85-82 in the conference title game behind 23 points from Harrison Barnes. Florida State last appeared in the NCAA Tournament under Hamilton during the 2020-21 season, when it made it to the Sweet 16 and lost to Michigan.

The Seminoles have struggled under since then, missing out on March Madness each of the last three seasons and managing to reach the quarterfinal round of the ACC Tournament just once in that span.

“I am deeply thankful for the tremendous support of our fans, alumni, and everyone associated with Florida State throughout my time here,” Hamilton said in a statement. “I am proud of the quality of the young men that it was my privilege to lead, for their faith in this program and in their belief in the philosophy that we tried to instill in them over the years. I have been blessed beyond words for the opportunity and the experience we’ve had here.
