The Iowa Hawkeyes men’s basketball team received a blow this morning as they are losing one of their key contributors who will miss the remainder of the season.

This morning, the Iowa men’s basketball announced that sophomore forward Owen Freeman will miss the remainder of the season due to a finger injury that is going to require surgery to correct.

The announcement comes from Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery after he had spoken with Freeman and his family regarding the decision.

“After discussions with Owen, his family, and our medical staff, surgery is the best course of treatment in terms of proper healing and rehabilitation. We expect Owne to make a full recovery. He has the full support of his teammates and coaches during this entire process,” McCaffery said in his statement announcing the news.

Freeman, a sophomore forward from Moline, Ill., has appeared in and started 19 games this season for the Hawkeyes. On the year, he is averaging 16.7 points per game while shooting 63.8% from the field. Freeman is also averaging 6.7 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game.

Iowa will turn to other forwards to replace Freeman’s production as he is Iowa’s leading scorer. They will look for Pryce Sandfort, Seydou Traore, Ladji Dembele, Riley Mulvey and Cooper Koch to step up as other forwards on the roster.
