Florida basketball starting point guard Walter Clayton Jr. is questionable for Tuesday’s game against Vanderbilt after suffering a left ankle injury on Saturday against Tennessee.
Clayton turned his ankle late in the first half after his foot landed on the foot of an opposing Tennessee player. He returned to play in the second half at less than 100% and finished the game scoring 10 points, all in the first half.
“We avoided anything too serious, which is awesome, but, you know, definitely tweaked his ankle pretty good there in the first half,” Florida Gators coach Todd Golden said Monday. “Second half (he) slipped in front of our bench – I don’t think there was anything added on because of that, just kind of a flukey deal. Obviously, he’s been knocking out his rehab and it’s recovering, he’s moving around pretty well, but we’ll kind of take it hour by hour right now, see how it goes this afternoon in practice.”
If Clayton can’t go, Florida would turn to junior guard Denzel Aberdeen for his first career start when No. 6 UF (18-3, 5-3 SEC) hosts the Commodores (7 p.m, SEC Network), with sophomore guard Urban Klavzar and freshman guard Isaiah Brown providing depth off the bench.
Clayton leads Florida in scoring (17.8 ppg) and assists (3.8 apg) and is two points shy of scoring 1,000 points in less than two seasons at UF.
