Clemson basketball’s Brad Brownell could be the ACC’s elder statesman next season.
Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton announced Monday he will resign at the end of this season after 23 years. This puts Brownell, 56, in position to be the conference’s longest-tenured coach in the 2025-26 season if he remains Clemson’s coach.
Hamilton, 76, is the second-oldest active Division I coach and has compiled an overall record of 434-290, including a mark of 196-186 in ACC regular-season games. He will join the list of longtime ACC coaches who have departed in recent years, including Roy Williams (North Carolina), Mike Krzyzewski (Duke), Jim Boeheim (Syracuse), Mike Brey (Notre Dame), Tony Bennett (Virginia) and Jim Larrañaga (Miami).

Brownell, who was hired in 2010 and in July 2024 received a contract extension through 2029, is in his 15th season with Clemson and is the program’s winningest coach. If he remains Clemson’s coach next season, he would be the only ACC coach with more than 10 years of experience in the conference. The next closest are N.C. State’s Kevin Keatts (2017), Pitt’s Jeff Capel (2018) and Virginia Tech’s Mike Young (2019).
In his Clemson career, Brownell is 14-17 vs. Hamilton. The Tigers defeated Florida State on Jan. 11, winning 77-57 at Littlejohn Coliseum. Brownell and Clemson will face Hamilton and FSU at least one more time this season on Feb. 15 in Tallahassee, Florida.
