Bracketology: Projecting UConn men’s basketball NCAA Tournament fate

[ad_1]

Connecticut men’s basketball got off to a strong February on the first day of the month, notching its biggest win of the season on Saturday, taking down No. 9 Marquette on the road, 77-69.

The win moved the Huskies (16-6 overall, 8-3 in conference) back up to 19 in the latest AP Top 25 Poll, released on Monday, after barely remaining in the poll at No. 25th last week. UConn is 18th in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. Does the decisive road victory over the Golden Eagles signal the turning of a corner for the back-to-back defending champs? That remains to be seen, but the door is now ajar for a strong finish to Big east regular season play.

Heading into Saturday night’s matchup, Marquette was 9-1 in Big East play, two games ahead of UConn in the standings. With the win, UConn pulls within a game of Marquette and Creighton, which are tied for second in the conference at 9-2. St. John’s remains on top with a record of 10-1 after escaping with a 68-66 win over Providence over the weekend.

The upcoming week is a pivotal one in the Big East and for UConn, with matchups that could shake up the standings. Marquette travels to New York City to play the Red Storm on Tuesday in a battle between two of the conference’s top teams. Meanwhile, Connecticut does not see the floor until Friday, when it hosts St. John’s. Marquette also travels to play Creighton in Nebraska on Saturday. All three of these matchups give the Huskies a significant chance to catch the three programs ahead of them in the Standings.
