Purdue basketball player ratings vs. Indiana: Trey Kaufman-Renn makes most of minutes

WEST LAFAYETTE —  Purdue men’s basketball summoned just enough to hold off Indiana 81-76 Friday night at Mackey Arena and stay within comfortable reach of contending for the Big Ten championship.

Trey Kaufman-Renn’s basket gave the Boilermakers the lead in the final seconds, and Fletcher Loyer’s free throws with 3.3 seconds left helped clinch it. Kaufman-Renn picked off IU’s desperation pass and iced the victory at the line.

Purdue broke a tie with the Hoosiers for 10th-most wins in NCAA history (1,946-1,945).

STARTERS

◼ Braden Smith: 7/10

At times in the first half he seemed as off-kilter as the whole offense, needing 12 shots to score 14 before the break. Continued his defensive thievery, and it helped drive a more efficient second half offensively. The six turnovers somewhat undercut the rest of the performance (24 points, seven assists, six steals).

◼ C.J. Cox: 7/10

Worked his way into position for some key rebounds — including a big put-back during the 11-1 run to start the second half. Is potentially laying the foundation for a special defensive career.

◼ Fletcher Loyer: 6/10

Suffered the most from that lack of first half offensive flow, making 1 of 6 from the field. Struggled to even find attempts for much of the second half, but connected for a big 3 when absolutely needed. Made his 15 points count, including two big free throws with 3.3 seconds left.

◼ Caleb Furst: 4/10

When Kaufman-Renn sat with foul issues, IU went right at Furst on defense. Both bigs were too absent on the boards throughout. Couldn’t provide the physical response needed underneath. Only two rebounds in 21 minutes is an issue if the offensive impact is so minimal.
