Indiana basketball drops a heartbreaker in final minute to No. 10 Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE — The Indiana basketball team didn’t go down without a fight against No. 10 Purdue on Friday night at Mackey Arena.

Boilermakers forward Trey Kaufman-Renn hit the go-ahead basket with 11 seconds to go to give his team an 81-76 win. The teams traded baskets in the final 30 seconds with Trey Galloway giving IU the briefest of leads with a floater in the lane.

The Hoosiers (14-8, 5-6 Big Ten) couldn’t overcome 20 turnovers — the second most this season — and lost for the fifth time in six games.

Indiana led 41-37 over Purdue at the half with both teams shooting better than 50%.

The Hoosiers’ 41-34 lead late in the half was the largest for either team. They overcame 10 first half turnovers with a strong showing on the glass — the Hoosiers won the rebounding battle, 19-12 — and holding the Boilermakers to just one 3-pointer (1 of 6).

Purdue (17-5, 9-2) jumped back in front with an 11-1 run during the first five minutes of the second half with the Hoosiers gifting the Boilermakers points off turnovers.

Malik Reneau, who missed much of the first half after picking up two early fouls, was called for an offensive foul before IU even crossed half court on one of its first possessions of the second half. He picked up four fouls in eight minutes and still managed to turn it over three times.

He wasn’t the only one to blame.

Indiana basketball coach Mike Woodson pulled starting point guard Myles Rice after he dribbled into the corner and unloaded a wild shot that hit the side of the backboard with 17:57 to play.

He was replaced by Trey Galloway at the next break and didn’t return until late. Rice signed with IU in hopes of being the team’s floor general, but he was a non-factor in his first rivalry game against Purdue.
