NMSU basketball: Robert Carpenter’s late block helps Aggies seal win vs Middle Tennessee

New Mexico State (12-9, 5-3 Conference USA) held off a late Middle Tennessee (14-7, 5-3) rally to snatch a 61-57 road win on Thursday evening. The victory snapped the Aggies’ three-game losing streak and moves them into a four-way tie for second place in CUSA with the Blue Raiders, UTEP and Liberty.

NM State held a 59-48 lead with 6:28 left to go, but MTSU stormed back with a 9-0 run to trail only 59-57 with 3:51 left. No points were scored in the next 3:44 before senior guard Christian Cook nailed two free throws to seal the Aggies’ victory.

The Blue Raiders had a chance to tie the game with eight seconds left, but Camryn Weston’s layup was blocked by graduate student forward Robert Carpenter and went out of bounds. A review determined the ball rolled off Weston before going out, so possession went to the Aggies and allowed them to close out the game.
