Good Morning, Illini Nation: Keep shooting

Jan. 31—Illinois shot 23.8 percent from three-point range in Thursday’s loss at Nebraska. A percentage that started off rough (3 of 18 shooting in the first half) and bottomed out in overtime (zero makes on eight attempts).

Was it the Illini’s worst shooting game of the season? No. In fact, it was just the sixth worth. Topping that particular list was a 17.4 percent effort in the loss to Tennessee.

Another tough night from three-point range, however, isn’t deterring Brad Underwood. The Illinois coach still wants his team to pull from beyond the arc.

“Not at all,” Underwood said in response to a question about all of the three-point misses bothering him. “I’m good with it because we got 21 back (on offensive rebounds), and those 21 lead to layups or opportunities. It’s one thing you can’t control. Without (Tomislav Ivisic), it’s no lie we’re not the greatest post-up team in the world, but we’ve got to be able to crease the defense with our guards. We have been. We’re one of the top teams in the country in two-point rate, but (Thursday) we didn’t. That’s a tribute to their defense.”
