Wisconsin basketball saw its red-hot momentum stall on Wednesday night in a 76-68 road loss to Maryland.
The Badgers were in control for most of the game’s first 30 minutes, led by continued offensive brilliance from star wing John Tonje. The Terrapins then caught fire at the 11-minute mark of the second half. They made three consecutive three-pointers to instigate a game-changing 11-0 run. That surge gave the team a lead it would not relinquish.

The result isn’t a ‘bad’ loss for the Badgers. Maryland entered Wednesday No. 19 in the NCAA NET Rankings, just one spot behind Wisconsin. It also entered on a similar hot streak, with five wins in its last six games, including road triumphs over Illinois and Indiana. Wednesday’s game was a Quad 1 game for both teams. For Maryland, the result adds a much-needed signature win to its resume.
Wisconsin will likely drop from its position on the No. 4-seed line in bracket projections after the defeat. However, it still holds a strong ranking in both KenPom and ESPN’s BPI:
KenPom: No. 19 overall (down from No. 14) and No. 4 in the Big Ten, with the No. 9 offense and No. 47 defense in the country.
ESPN BPI: No. 22 overall (no change) and No. 5 in the Big Ten, with a projected record of 22.2 – 8.8 and a 10% chance to win the Big Ten.
Notably, Wisconsin’s KenPom defensive rating jumped from No. 50 in the nation to No. 47 after the Maryland loss. Strong defense led to its chance at an upset win before the mentioned three-point barrage. Improved efficiency on that end of the court could be the key to the team’s postseason chances, especially if it maintains its top-ranked offensive efficiency.
Wisconsin must now regroup before a Saturday road trip to Northwestern. The team is in a three-way tie for fifth place in the Big Ten standings, 3 1/2 games behind first-place Michigan State. It faces a critical three-game stretch against the Wildcats, Indiana Hoosiers and Iowa Hawkeyes…
