The vibes surrounding Indiana basketball and Purdue basketball could hardly be more different this week.

The Hoosiers (14-7, 5-5 Big Ten) have dropped four of their past five games, and in all kinds of ways — a couple of blowouts, a second-half collapse and a last-minute heartbreaker. Their win in that span — over Ohio State — came in overtime. IU has work to do to reach the NCAA Tournament after missing out last season.

The No. 10 Boilermakers (16-5, 8-2) have been on an almost uninterrupted joyride this month — a 7-1 record, capped a stomping of then-ranked Michigan to bounce back from their lone January loss, to Ohio State.

The teams meet Friday night in West Lafayette for the seventh matchup between IU coach Mike Woodson and Purdue’s Matt Painter. The Boilers and Hoosiers have split six games with these two on the sideline, and both are 2-1 at home. Both IU wins in Bloomington, against top-5 Purdue squads, prompted a court storming from students.

The only player to play in all six of these games is Purdue’s Caleb Furst, totaling 21 points. IU’s Trey Galloway has appeared in five of the Woodson-Painter matchups, averaging 11.9 points.

IU led for the first 8 minutes, but No. 2 Purdue steamrolled the Hoosiers the rest of the way. With the Boilermakers comfortably ahead, Zach Edey told Braden Smith he had a plan: “He told me in the timeout before, or when we were out before, and he was like, ‘Hey, hit me on the pop,'” Smith said postgame. “And I kind of just giggled. I was like, ‘Dude, we’re only up 20. What are you doing?’ And it worked, so.” This was Edey’s only made 3-pointer with the Boilers.
