Auburn basketball has been battling Duke for the top spot in the KenPom rankings for weeks. Following Wednesday’s action, Auburn remains No. 2 in the KenPom. However, a new program has emerged to challenge Auburn and Duke for the No. 1 spot as the most efficient team in college basketball.
When the dust settled Wednesday, Houston had emerged as the No. 1 team in the KenPom, jumping Auburn and Duke for the top spot. The Cougars topped West Virginia on the road Wednesday, 63-49, to move to 17-3 on the season, and 9-0 in Big 12 play. Houston has won 13 games in a row, having not lost since Nov. 30 in Las Vegas against San Diego State. The Cougars have also dropped games to Auburn and Alabama this season.
Houston boasts a top-10 offense and defense according to KenPom analytics, and holds just a slight edge over Auburn for the No. 1 slot. Here is a look at how close Auburn is to reclaiming the top spot in the KenPom following its most recent victory, an 87-74 win over LSU.
Overall: No. 2
Auburn remains at No. 2 in the KenPom following its win at LSU on Wednesday. Houston claims the top spot with an efficiency rating of +36.35, a slight advantage over Auburn, which boasts a +36.04 rating. Florida (No. 4), Tennessee (No. 5), and Alabama (No. 7) join Auburn as SEC teams in the top-10.
Adjusted offensive efficiency: No. 1
Although Auburn is just outside of No. 1 overall, they can still brag about possessing the best offense in the nation according to KenPom. The Tigers are projected to score 129.5 points per 100 possessions, over five points higher than the No. 2 offense, which belongs to archrival Alabama.
Adjusted defensive efficiency: No. 12
Auburn still has a top-15 defense as the SEC schedule continues. The Tigers are projected to allow 93.4 points per 100 possessions, which is fourth-best in the SEC.
Adjusted tempo: No. 158
