What we learned from Cincinnati Bearcats basketball loss at Utah late Tuesday night

Jizzle James was back in double digits for UC Tuesday night at Utah.

SALT LAKE CITY – A 50-mile trip on Interstate 15 didn’t solve things for the Cincinnati Bearcats men’s basketball team.

In a Big 12 match between two desperate, slumping teams, Utah got the win in the Huntsman Center 69-66 holding off a second-half UC rally. Down as many as eight in the second stanza, UC took a 50-44 lead with 11:16 to go. From there, the Utes won on their own run to retake the lead. It was the first game all year that they scored less than 70 points and won.

Former UC Bearcat Gabe Madsen led Utah with 18 points and sank the decisive free throws at the end. Simas Lukošius had a final heave to tie the game but it was off-mark. Utah breaks a two-game skid and goes to 12-8 (4-5 Big 12). UC drops to 12-8 (2-7 Big 12).

Jizzle James led the Bearcats with 16 points and Lukošius was the only other UC player in double figures with 10.

UC’s Day Day Thomas was hit with a flagrant 2 foul late in the game. Mike Sharavjamts missed both free throws. UC was able to come back and tie the game at 62 with 3:12 remaining, but the Utes pulled away to delight of what fans attended.

2nd half run for Cincinnati Bearcats hurt by free throw shooting

Not helping matters was UC’s erratic free-throw shooting which could have kept it close. Three times a front end of a one-and-one was missed. At one point UC was 6-for-14, they finished the game 14-for-22.

Late 1st half issues again for Cincinnati Bearcats

Saturday at BYU, UC had tied the game near the end of the half, then allowed a 5-0 run to trail at the break. Tuesday, the scenario repeated.

UC tied the game at 34 late in the first half, but over the final two minutes, the Utes went on a 6-0 run to take a 40-34 lead. Ezra Ausar, who averages 11 points per game, had 11 at halftime. The Bearcats held Utah’s top scorer, Gabe Madsen, without a point for over 12 minutes, and then he scored nine in a little over two minutes. There were seven lead changes in the first… [ad_2]
