UConn women’s basketball back on the road with Big East game at DePaul: How to watch, what to know

After taking sole possession of No. 1 in the Big East on Saturday, the UConn women’s basketball team is headed back on the road looking to remain undefeated in the conference against DePaul in Chicago on Wednesday night.

The No. 6 Huskies (19-2, 10-0 Big East) enter the matchup after playing their closest conference game of the season at Creighton last weekend, but DePaul (11-11, 6-3) doesn’t have the roster to battle with UConn’s talent for four quarters the way the Bluejays’ veteran core could. The Blue Demons start two first-year transfers and a true sophomore, and the team has also spent the entire season playing without Hall of Fame head coach Doug Bruno. Bruno had led the program since 1988 but has been out indefinitely since he experienced a medical incident in September. Longtime associate head coach Jill Pizzotti is serving as interim coach in his absence.

DePaul is powered by star guard Jorie Allen, who leads the league with 19.7 points per game in Big East play. Allen is averaging 19.5 points, six rebounds and four assists on the season, but UConn has been remarkably successful against the top scorers in the conference. The Huskies held Creighton’s Lauren Jensen, who averages 17.4 per game, to 11 points on Saturday, and Georgetown’s Kelsey Ransom, who leads the Big East with 19.8 points per game, scored a combined 16 across two losses to UConn.

“I don’t think it’s like, a moment or a play or two. I think it’s the constant (pressure), that it’s there the entire time,” coach Geno Auriemma said. “It’s never wavering. It’s never where, these next few possessions you’re going to get a breather. It’s just relentless, and it has to be that way for us. We’re not a great shot-blocking team. We’re not the most athletic team in the world, so I think our goal is — it may not happen right away — but to try to wear teams down.”
