Kon Knueppel’s season at Duke has gone well, including viral ‘assist’ Monday

Wisconsin Lutheran High School alumnus Kon Knueppel, whose Duke University basketball team has a 18-2 record and stands at No. 2 in the country, made a play that went viral Monday for an unusual assist.

With Duke nursing a 65-62 lead late against North Carolina State, Duke’s Tyrese Proctor nearly lost his balance out of bounds trying to corral a loose basketball, at which point the freshman Knueppel grabbed Proctor’s leg to steady him. Proctor stayed in bounds as was fouled; Duke staved off the upset, 74-64.

Knueppel, who scored 19 points in the win, has been Duke’s second-leading scorer this year, behind national player of the year contender Cooper Flagg.

How has Kon Knueppel fared at Duke University this year?

Knueppel is up to 13.1 points per game for the Blue Devils, along with 3.7 rebounds per contest and 2.6 assists. He’s also shooting 37.3% from three-point range (47-for-126) and 87.2% at the line. He has the most makes from deep of anyone on the team.

Against Miami on Jan. 14, Knueppel posted a career-best 25 points, shooting 9-of-11 from the field, while adding three boards and two assists. Duke won the game, 89-54.

Duke hasn’t lost since Nov. 26, when it incurred a 75-72 setback against Kansas, then the No. 1 team in the country. The Blue Devils also lost to No. 19 Kentucky on Nov. 12, 77-72.

Duke now gears up for a Feb. 1 battle with fierce rival North Carolina, with a 5:30 p.m. CT tip from Cameron Indoor in Durham. The matchup has a particular Wisconsin flavor this year; Menomonee Falls High School alumnus Seth Trimble has scored 12.4 points per game for the Tar Heels this year, and he just scored 18 points with 12 rebounds in a 102-96 win over Boston College in overtime on Jan. 25. Trimble played 43 minutes in the victory.
