A mid-week bye comes at a good time as No. 6 Florida basketball prepares for a challenging stretch in its 2024-25 season.
Six of the final 11 opponents that the Florida Gators (18-2, 5-2 SEC) will face in the regular season are ranked, beginning with a rematch with No. 8 Tennessee on Saturday at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tenn.
Florida beat the Vols 73-43 in the first meeting between the two schools on Jan. 7 at the O’Connell Center.
Florida has won three in a row since falling 83-82 to Missouri on Jan. 14.
“Our practices, they just turned on after the Missouri game,” Florida sophomore forward Thomas Haugh said. “And, after we dropped that game at home, at practice and the practices leading from that have been really really aggressive and those guys, the starting group and the second group, have been going at each other, and it’s been really good for our team. It’s showing off right now.”
How Florida basketball fared last week:
Florida 70, South Carolina 69: Senior guard Will Richard scored the go-ahead left-handed bank shot with 5.8 seconds remaining as UF capped a 14-point second half comeback to squeak by the Gamecocks. Richard scored a game-high 22 points in the win as UF recorded 14 steals and scored 22 points off 15 South Carolina turnovers.
Florida 89, Georgia 59: Starting guards Walter Clayton Jr. and Alijah Martin each scored 17 points, leading five players in double figures as the Gators posted their 12th straight win over the Bulldogs and their most lopsided win over UGA since beating the Bulldogs 77-44 on Jan. 9, 2013.
