What Memphis basketball scoring 100 against UAB could mean moving forward

The clock read 6.4 seconds, in a game that had never really been competitive, and the fans inside FedExForum were going as wild as they had all Sunday afternoon.

PJ Carter had just connected on a 3-pointer, extending 20-point lead to 23. The cheer wasn’t for the impact the shot might have on Memphis’ standing in the NET — it was a lot simpler. The Tigers had just hit 100 points for the first time this season to cap off what a few seconds later would be a 100-77 win over UAB.

“We for sure wanted 100 points,” star guard PJ Haggerty said. “It was a great shot by PJ. Shoutout PJ Carter.”

Carter’s shot capped off a remarkable offensive showing that didn’t feature any of the issues that have plagued the Tigers during unremarkable wins over lesser AAC competition. Memphis (16-4, 6-1 AAC) had only three first-half turnovers against UAB (12-8, 5-2) after throwing it away 14 times in the first 20 minutes against Wichita State on Thursday. Colby Rogers broke out of his shooting slump and was 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Dain Dainja, inserted into the starting lineup for the first time since November, reeked havoc on UAB’s interior defense throughout the game.

Memphis had made a habit of dispiriting first-half performances in conference play, but there were no signs of that Sunday. The Tigers took the lead 49 seconds into the game and never relinquished it, and — dressed in white Memphis State uniforms on throwback day — they easily extinguished the Blazers, who could not stop the Tigers’ offensive attack.

“We could not guard them,” UAB coach Andy Kennedy said. “Couldn’t guard them inside, couldn’t guard them outside. I thought Memphis completely dominated us, tap to buzzer.”

Though the Tigers have been significant favorites in all of their conference games, Sunday was only the second blowout AAC win after a 28-point win in the opener at FAU. And it wasn’t just Dainja, who finished with 21 points on 10-for-12 shooting and eight rebounds.
