It can be a tough adjustment for basketball players getting their first taste of the high school level. Most freshmen play junior varsity or on a freshman team, but there are also freshmen making an impact on the varsity level.
Here’s a look at 10 freshmen having impressive seasons with a poll for the breakout freshman of the year below the bios. The poll will run through Friday at noon.
Ziming Wang, Erie Prep Academy: Wang is off to an impressive start with 13.4 points per game. The 6-foot, 4-inch forward has scored in double digits in five straight games.
C.J. Shorts, Cochranton: Shorts is scoring 8.8 points per game for the Cardinals this season. He is part of the reason Cochranton is in contention for the region with three weeks to go.
Cedrick Boyd, Sharon: Boyd has been a solid rebounder for the Tigers this year. The 6-2 forward is making the most of his minutes by scoring 7.4 points per game.
Dalton Boyd, Seneca: The 6-1 freshman is scoring 6.3 points per game for the Bobcats. He has scored in 15 of Seneca’s 16 games this winter.
Ashton Wilbur, Mercyhurst Prep: Wilbur has been a solid contributor off the bench. The 5-11 guard is averaging 4.9 points per game and recently scored 14 against Harbor Creek.

Bella Saxe, Commodore Perry: The 5-7 guard/forward is scoring 13.2 points per game in her first season. She is one of several Panthers having a big freshman year.
Ava Cascio, Greenville: The 5-5 guard has worked her way into significant playing time for the young Trojans. She is scoring 10.8 points per game as Greenville’s leading scorer.
Ava Luteran, Meadville: The freshman is having a solid season with 8.5 points per game. She is helping the Bulldogs rebuild the program this winter.
Lily Muckinhaupt, Saegertown: Muckinhaupt is scoring 6.9 points per game, including three double-digit games this winter.
