With the Big Ten regular season just about at its halfway point, Michigan State looks to be on pace for its first conference regular season title in four years.

In its lone game of the week, Tom Izzo’s seventh-ranked Spartans (17-2, 8-0 in Big Ten) kept alive their undefeated start to conference play with an 81-74 win over Rutgers at Madison Square Garden in New York. It’s the 12th consecutive win for Michigan State, and their best start in Big Ten play since 2018-2019.

Spartans freshman guard Jase Richardson hit 6 of 9 shots from the field on the way to a career-high 20 points in his first game inside The World’s Most Famous Arena. The Spartans, who are 12-0 since Tre Holloman entered the starting lineup, have a one-game lead over Purdue in the Big Ten standings.

Speaking of Purdue, the Boilermakers split the week 1-1 at Mackey Arena with a loss to Ohio State and a win over then-No. 21 Michigan. Purdue senior guard Braden Smith finished three rebounds shy of recording a triple-double in the Boilermakers’ 91-64 romp over the Wolverines, who split last week’s games with an 80-76 overtime win vs. Northwestern.

Wisconsin appears to be back on track after a rocky December start to Big Ten play, as the Badgers defeated Nebraska 83-55 on Sunday at the Kohl Center for their eighth win in their last nine contests.
