Brown men’s basketball falters late against Dartmouth — three thoughts on the Bears

PROVIDENCE — Brown men’s basketball enjoyed a bustling first half.

The Bears were on pace for a season-high in points as Kino Lilly Jr. eclipsed 300 career 3-pointers and Lyndel Erold turned in a scoring high. But it’s all buried by Brown’s second-half collapse against Dartmouth at the Pizzitola Center.

The Bears surrendered 19 straight points just after the halftime intermission and their last-second shot had the visitors celebrating on Saturday. It’s just the first Dartmouth win, an 84-83 finish, in Providence since 2017.

Dartmouth’s Ryan Cornish was clipped on a drive with 18.3 left in regulation and he made both free throws to put the Big Green ahead. Erold’s answer from the right corner was long, and the rebound knocked away, as the Bears (9-8, 1-3) fell again in league play.

“Our second half offense wasn’t good enough,” Brown coach Mike Martin said. “Our defense wasn’t good enough the entire game. I thought we did a decent job protecting our paint defensively, but obviously, no points in the paint for us.”

Brown falls to Dartmouth 84-83 at Pizzitola Sports Center. Dartmouth’s Ryan Cornish, with ball, made late game free throw to put them ahead.

It was just Dartmouth’s second win in the last six tries, and third since 2018, against Brown.  Cornish led all scorers with 25 points and forward, Brandon Mitchell-Day, finished with 23 points and 20 rebounds.

Here are three thoughts on Brown vs. Dartmouth:

Brown’s offense falters without the 3-point shot

The Bears surged to a 52-40 halftime lead on Lilly’s step-back 3-pointer at the buzzer. It was one of 10 makes from beyond the arc for Brown in the opening 20 minutes.

AJ Lesburt Jr. was 5-of-9 from 3 for 18 points as Brown’s offense was humming before the break. Lilly’s extra pass to Erold for a corner trey pushed the advantage to 13, Brown’s largest lead of the game, with 5:15 left.
