What Duke basketball coach Jon Scheyer said about Caleb Foster’s role for Blue Devils

DURHAM — Caleb Foster is trying to find his footing in a new role for Duke basketball.

The second-ranked Blue Devils (16-2, 8-0 ACC) have won 12 games in a row as the hottest team in college hoops, including 11 since Tulane transfer Sion James was inserted into the starting lineup against Auburn.

That move sent Foster to the bench, where the sophomore guard is experiencing a roller-coaster role as a reserve. Foster is averaging 6.2 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game, but those numbers have fluctuated since he started coming off the bench.

In seven games as a starter, Foster had three games with double-digit points, averaging 8.5 points. 2.3 rebounds, 2 assists and 22.4 minutes in that stretch. In 11 games as a reserve, Foster has one game with double-digit points (11 points vs. Auburn) and three scoreless performances. Since stepping into a reserve role, Foster has averaged 4.6 points, 1.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 15 minutes per game.

“It’s part of the journey. One, I’ve been there as a player. I felt what it’s like in many different times of my career to have really good success, then you get knocked back, then you start, then don’t,” Duke coach Jon Scheyer said Thursday inside the Bill Brill Media Room at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

“End of the day, I believe in Caleb. End of the day, this is part of the journey that you have to go on and you have to get over a hump or you have to continue to develop. That’s where Caleb’s at.”

Jon Scheyer says Duke basketball will ‘need’ Caleb Foster at Wake Forest, moving forward

Foster was finding a groove in the latter stages of last season, but an ankle injury at Wake Forest ended his freshman year. He had eight points before exiting the Blue Devils’ game in Winston-Salem, where Duke eventually suffered a court-storming loss to the Demon Deacons.

Foster and his teammates will return to Joel Coliseum on Saturday (4:30 p.m., ESPN) for a matchup with red-hot Wake Forest (15-4, 7-1), which has won six in a row….
