St. Louis Incarnate Word will bring its girls basketball powerhouse back to Louisville this weekend, but the Red Knights’ record-setting winning streak is over.
Incarnate Word had set a national record with 141 consecutive victories but saw that streak come to an end Monday in a 74-65 loss to California power Etiwanda at the Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts.
It was Incarnate Word’s first loss since dropping a 46-44 decision to Missouri’s Rock Bridge on Feb. 8, 2020.
“Hopefully, we take away from this loss the things that we need to improve on,” Incarnate Word coach Dan Rolfes told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch after the loss. “This will make us reflect and find out what we need to do to get better.”
Sacred Heart’s Amirah “Tootie” Jordan, right, and Incarnate Word’s Nevaeh Caffey are scheduled to square off Saturday at Mercy.
Incarnate Word will face Manual on Friday and Sacred Heart on Saturday in the Raatz Fence/O’Shea’s Basketball Classic at Mercy.
The two-day event features six of Kentucky’s top-15 teams in the Kentucky High School Girls Basketball Media Poll: No. 1 Sacred Heart, No. 2 George Rogers Clark, No. 3 Cooper, No. 4 Franklin County, No. 11 Henderson County and No. 12 Simon Kenton.
The marquee game is set for 2 p.m. Saturday when Incarnate Word will face Sacred Heart. Incarnate Word has won four straight Class 6 state championships in Missouri, and Sacred Heart has won four straight Kentucky state titles.
Incarnate Word (11-1) returned to its winning ways Wednesday with a 74-14 rout of Missouri’s St. Dominic and is led by senior guard Nevaeh Caffey, who has signed with Indiana University. Caffey scored 21 points as Incarnate Word beat Sacred Heart 52-50 in last year’s Raatz Fence/O’Shea’s Basketball Classic.
Sacred Heart (11-2) — winner of 82 straight games against Kentucky opponents — is led by LSU signee ZaKiyah Johnson (22.3 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 3.4 apg).
