The first half of the Indiana basketball-Northwestern game seemed to take forever because of clock issues. So what was the problem?

Big Ten Network play-by-play announcer Brandon Gaudin said on the broadcast that the referees’ timing system malfunctioned, causing the game and shot clocks to stop on occasion while play continued.

Referees use Precision Time equipment to sync their whistles to the game clock.

Mike Constabile, who holds the patent to the system, calls it a “digital fingerprint” to more precisely measure game time. When a ref blows the whistle to make a call, it communicates with a belt pack worn by that ref, and sends a signal to stop the clock at the scorer’s table.

There were two stoppages in the first half due to timing issues. So, Gaudin said, the referees took off their belt packs and were taking the old-school approach and trusting the clock operators at the scorer’s table.
