There were three minutes left in the first half of UConn’s 80-78 overtime victory over Butler on Tuesday night when the FS1 camera zoomed in on UConn coach Dan Hurley. He crossed his arms and marched over to the referee at the start of the media timeout, pleading for a foul as the official turned his back to begin walking away.
The broadcast caught Hurley apparently saying, “Don’t turn your back on me. I’m the best coaching in the (expletive) sport.”
It was yet another viral sideline moment for the UConn coach, who reposted a video of the exchange with a meme on X, like he did after his fiery exchange with an opposing fan after last year’s loss at Creighton.
This time, his face was edited over a character from the 1993 movie “Falling Down,” saying, “I’m the bad guy?… How’d that happen?” Hurley replied to that post with the hashtag “B2B,” (back-to-back), and emojis of a Husky, a heart and two trophies.
“I’m gonna sound like an (expletive) here,” he said when he was asked about the viral clip in his postgame press conference. “I want some level of communication… I think what had happened on that particular play was Alex (Karaban) got fouled by (Andre) Screen on the defensive rebound… and he kind of stumbled backwards. While he was stumbling backwards, he got held and it ended up being a jump ball, so now we lost the possession arrow. Now that possession arrow, that’s an issue when you get to late game.”
The holding while UConn is trying to run its off-ball actions in its half court offense is largely what Hurley has taken issue with since the Huskies returned stateside after being outshot by 50 at the free throw line over three games in the Maui Invitational.
“For all the success we’ve had the last couple years, I don’t think there’s a program that has won as much as we’ve won that, at times, gets as bad a whistle,” Hurley said.
Butler was afforded 28 free throw attempts on Tuesday night, doubling up the Huskies’ 14.
