Two area men’s basketball players earn recognition; who are they?

Earl Timberlake helped Bryant extend its impressive men’s basketball start in the America East and Ryan Mela was a factor for the Providence College men in the only Big East game he played last week.

Both took home some hardware from their respective conferences on Monday, with Timberlake named Player of the Week and Mela named Freshman of the Week.

Timberlake was dominant for the Bulldogs in double-digit wins over Albany and UMass Lowell. He averaged 17.5 points, 13.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 4.0 blocked shots and connected at 13-for-18 from the field. Timberlake flirted with a triple-double against the Great Danes and comfortably secured a double-double against the River Hawks.

Bryant started with an 89-79 win at Albany on Thursday. Timberlake collected 21 points, nine rebounds and eight assists while adding four blocked shots. He went 7-for-9 from the floor and missed just one of his eight free throws, helping to lead an attack that saw five players reach double figures in scoring. The Bulldogs built a 19-point lead midway through the second half and cruised from there.

Timberlake was just as good in an 85-62 blowout of UMass Lowell at Chace Center on Saturday. He totaled 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting and pulled down 18 rebounds, firing past his previous career high of 15. Timberlake added five assists, four blocked shots and two steals in a rematch of last year’s conference tournament semifinals.

Bryant (10-9, 4-0 America East) visits New Hampshire on Thursday as the only team in its league without a conference loss. The Bulldogs have defeated Maine, Vermont and the River Hawks through four games — those three teams sit beneath Bryant in the top four of the standings. It will be Feb. 20 before the Bulldogs see any of those opponents again, starting a three-game road swing with a trip to Vermont.
