Jimmies men’s hoops dominates Valley City State 72-56

Jan. 18—JAMESTOWN — The University of Jamestown men’s basketball team used a big first half to get a 72-56 win over Valley City State University on Saturday, Jan. 18, at Harold Newman Arena.

The two teams met earlier this season on Jan. 3, with the Jimmies getting a tight 85-81 win.

“I think both halves we played very hard. I remember first half last game it was a little iffy on our effort at sometimes, especially myself,” Jimmies fifth-year senior Jimmy Llinas said. “So I think that was a big difference.”

The Jimmies (11-7, 6-1) started the game clicking on all cylinders taking a 15-3 lead. The Vikings were able to bring it closer to 28-16 but the Jimmies kept punching back on their way to a 44-24 halftime lead. In the opening 20 minutes, the Jimmies led the Vikings in virtually all of the statistical categories. The Jimmies shot 51.4% from the field and 44.4% from three, with a 20-13 rebounding advantage. The Vikings shot 38.% from the field and 40% from three. The Jimmie had a 12-3 assists advantage and scored 13 points off nine turnovers. Meanwhile, the Jimmies gave up five points off four turnovers.

“I did think so. You could see from our energy and how we were able to swarm to the ball and rotate,” Jimmies head coach Casey Bruggeman said about his team’s defense. “I thought we were very sharp, we were playing agressive and we covered a lot of ground during that stretch of time.”

In the opening half, the Jimmies were led by Llinas and Owen Hektner’s ten points and the Vikings were led by Jayden Patcha’s seven points.

The Vikings (10-9, 1-6) started the second half with a mini-run to trim the deficit to 46-30. The Jimmies immediately responded with a three from Hektner extending the lead out to 49-30. Later in the half after the Jimmies took a 55-34 lead, Bruggeman was very excited and walked down his bench saying something to his players as he passed them.
